Big Foot FFA Members Attend and Compete at the 2019 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN

Twelve Big Foot High School FFA members and three Big Foot FFA Graduates attended the 92nd National FFA Convention & Expo on October 29th - November 2nd. Students got to explore the Expo and Career Show, learning about career opportunities available within the agriculture industry, as well as meet with representatives from various universities across the country.

As a chapter, the Big Foot FFA was recognized nationally as a Three Star Chapter out of only 250 chapters, which is only 3% of the total amount of chartered chapters throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Four Big Foot students had the opportunity to compete in the National Agriscience Fair. Senior Melissa Konkel, placing 10th in the Animal Systems category, division 5 (11-12th, individual); Sophomore Amanda Bender, placing 9th in the Plant systems category, division 3 (9-10th, individual); and Olivia Peterson and Bryce Peterson, placing 6th in the Animal Systems category, division 6 (11-12th, partner).

Big Foot graduate Amelia Hayden showed outstanding success at this year’s convention, not only for Big Foot High School, but for the state of Wisconsin. She represented Wisconsin as both a National Star in Agriscience Finalist and as Wisconsin’s National Officer Candidate. Out of all 50 states, only four members are selected to compete for the first place title of Star in Agriscience at the national level. As well, only 44 members graduate members (one from each state who applied) got to advance to and complete the interview process for national office.

Two graduate members of Big Foot High School, Faith Carpenter and Amelia Hayden, also received their American FFA Degrees, the highest degree of membership in the FFA and one of which only 0.5% of the total membership obtain.

Members not competing attended a number of general sessions held in Lucas Oil Stadium lead by the 2018-2019 national officer team. Students heard the wise words and wisdom from numerous speakers and agriculture company leaders, such as the vice president of Cargill and professional speaker Michelle Poler.

All in all, for the Big Foot FFA, the 2019 National FFA Convention was filled with smiles, laughs, and fun memories made as students got to bond over the activities they participated in together.
