FBLA Students Qualify for the National Competition
Congratulations to our FBLA State Qualifiers and our school record 22 National Qualifiers! 26 students virtually attended the State Leadership Conference on March 28-29 in Madison. These students qualified for the state conference by earning a top three finish at the regional competition on February 5. The students competed in 18 different events; in order to qualify for nationals, they needed to earn in the top 4 of their respective event out of the 21 state qualifiers. The National Competition will be held in Chicago, IL from June 28 - July 2.

Gus Foster, Val Lopez & Alex Schmitz - Broadcast Journalism
The team of Gus, Val, and Alex won the regional competition and followed that up by becoming state champions in this event. These students had to create a live 'broadcast' with stories based on at least three of seven given categories. Included in this presentation needed to be an interview. Val and Alex were the anchors of their broadcast while Gus was a field reporter.
Eli Laing - Coding & Programming
Eli won this event after not needing to present at the regional competition. In this event, Eli had to develop a program that recommends attractions to potential visitors of the area. Eli developed a program that allowed users to search for attractions based on the user's desired attributes.
Scarlett Georges - Computer Applications
Scarlett won this event at the regional competition and continued her success by becoming the state champion at the state competition. Scarlett completed a two-hour pre-conference production test where she was given several jobs to complete utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. She also took an objective test related to the entire Microsoft Office Suite.
Lauren Decker - Job Interview
Lauren took third place at her regional competition, but improved to become a state champion in this event. Lauren had to submit a Cover Letter and a Resume to a fictitious company applying for "any job that she would be qualified for." At the state competition, Lauren was interviewed by a panel of judges pretending to be the hiring committee of the company.
Joe Brusa - Spreadsheet Applications
Joe won this event at the regional competition and continued his success by becoming the state champion. Joe completed a one-hour pre-conference production test where he was given several jobs to complete utilizing Microsoft Excel. He also took an objective test related to Microsoft Excel concepts and strategies.
Ashley Miller - Graphic Design
In this event, Ashley was 'hired' as a design team to create a logo and artwork for a new men's clothing store. Ashley chose to design clothing for a fictitious business highlighting designs from New Mexico's style. At the regional competition, Ashley won this event, and followed that up by taking second place at the state competition.
Ellyn Blakeman & Declan McHugh - Website Design
As a team, Ellyn and Declan won the regional competition and followed that up with a second place at state. In this event, they were tasked to create a website for a new local business. Ellyn and Declan chose their business to be the Geneva Lake Resort based out of Fontana. In their demonstration presentation, they showcased their website and explained the design process.
Abby Hildebrandt - Electronic Career Portfolio
Abby had to create an electronic career presentation about a potential future career opportunity. She was our regional champion in this event and followed that up with a third place finish at state. Abby chose to present on being a Financial Manager at a bank and how she will obtain this goal. Abby's presentation included research on her career choice as well as a demonstration of her resume and personal experiences.
Ethan Connelly - Public Speaking
Ethan took third place at the regional competition and continued that with a third place showing at state. In this event, Ethan was required to prepare a speech no more than five minutes "of a business nature and must be developed from one or more of the FBLA goals."
Joey Schmitz & Ricky Ocampo - Sales Presentation
The team of Joey and Ricky took second place at the regional competition and took third place at state. In this event, Joey and Ricky had to prepare for an interactive sales presentation to a panel of judges. Joey and Ricky chose to 'sell' Oakley sunglasses.
Eli Gerdes - Word Processing
Eli took second place at the regional competition and took third place at state. Eli completed a one-hour pre-conference production test where he was given several jobs to complete utilizing Microsoft Word. He also took an objective test related to Microsoft Word concepts and strategies.
Emily Leon - Client Services
Emily was a regional runner-up in this event and followed that up with a fourth place finish at state. In this event, Emily was given a task ten minutes prior to her interactive presentation with the judges where she needed to 'answer the phone' to a customer's complaint.
Amanda Bender - Future Business Leader
Amanda was a regional champion in this event and followed that up with a fourth place finish at state. In this event, Amanda had to create a resume and a cover letter applying for the title of Future Business Leader. Prior to the state competition, Amanda had to take a 100-question object test. At state, Amanda was interviewed by a panel of judges who were looking for why Amanda will be a future business leader.
In addition to the 16 national qualifiers, we also have three teams/individual who will be an alternate qualifier due to one of the top four winners in their events unable to attend. Congratulations to Angelina Anderson & Dejanira Ortiz Hernandez in Digital Video Production, Coco Counter in Impromptu Speaking, and AJ Hartmann and Andrew Ruhl in Introduction to Social Media Strategies for earning fifth place in their respective events.
In addition to the individual awards, the Big Foot FBLA chapter earned a chapter award this year. The outstanding chapter awards are given to high schools based purely on their students’ successes at state. Due to our successes, the Big Foot chapter earned 3rd place in Outstanding Chapter.
