The Big Foot FFA attended the 98th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana. Members attended sessions, networked in the expo hall, enjoyed the shopping mall, and were able to do some tours along the way.
On Tuesday October 28th, Big Foot FFA left BFHS headed towards Indianapolis, Indiana. The chapter made a stop for a tour and lunch at Fair Oaks Farm in Fair Oaks, Indiana. Members got to tour swine facilities, learning what it takes to raise market ready animals.
Bright and early on Wednesday, our Agricultural Communications team, consisting of Gavin Baxter, Rebecca Konkel, Gianna Kud, and Hoyt Dase competed. Their contest consisted of an exam as well as each of their practicums, lasting a total of 6 hours. The rest of the chapter enjoyed the shopping mall and expo center where they got to meet with colleges and industry leaders in agriculture. Members also got to experience the Indianapolis Speedway Museum and Tour. The chapter then attended the first general session where they heard from our national officers, saw the parade of flags, and tuned into the keynote speaker, A’ric Jackson. Students then had the opportunity for some night fun entertainment either attending the Ella Langley concert or the 13th Hour Haunted House.
Thursday was a day full of awards. At the second general session, Big Foot FFA Chapter received our 3- Star National Chapter award. Our agricultural communications team received a silver ranking, just a few short from a gold. Students that participated in the agriscience fair were recognized during the third general session. Jayce Henningfeld was 5th and Evan Henningfeld was 4th, nationally in the Food Products and Processing Agriscience Fair division! Members ended the session by listening to an inspiring retiring address by Mary Schreiber, our Central-Region National Vice President from East Troy, WI.
Friday was another day of accomplishments! We attended the Friday morning fourth general session. During this session Mrs. Lisa Konkel, BFHS FFA Advisor and Agricultural Educator received her Honorary American Degree. We also were able to recognize two more members and their outstanding work in agriscience research, Emily Zimmerman and Brilie Esser placed 10th in the nation in their category Environmental Services & Natural Resources. After the session students then had the opportunity to finish up any last minute shopping or browsing in the expo hall.
Saturday we were able to recognize two members that have shown their hard work and dedication to our organization. Amanda Bender and John Rambatt received their American Degree. This degree is one of the most prestigious awards that the National FFA Organization awards with less than 1% of members receiving it.
Overall, the 98th National FFA Convention & Expo was a great experience for our chapter, celebrating our achievements, making new connections, and encouraging our members to continue their journey in this organization.
